When couples ask me where to take engagement photos, I always start with this: Des Moines has way more range than people realize. Truly! There are so many Des Moines engagement locations that allow me to completely tailor the session to your personality, whether that’s polished and architectural, relaxed and nature-forward, or something that feels effortlessly urban and lived-in.
The other thing I’m always upfront about? Not every location works the same way. Some are free, some require a fee, and some need appointments or permission, and navigating that respectfully matters. With everything, it is always better to ask permission than forgiveness. A lot of incredible locations now charge fees (or limit access entirely) because photographers took advantage in the past. Doing this the right way protects these spaces for future couples, and honestly, it just feels better. Now let’s talk through the types of locations we can hit and what they’re best for!

These locations are perfect if you’re drawn to structure, clean lines, timeless interiors, and that elevated editorial feel. They photograph beautifully year-round and feel intentional from the second you step in!
The lobby at The Surety Hotel: Is a standout for couples who want modern, refined energy without it feeling stiff. It’s warm, stylish, and incredibly well-designed, but it does require a fee per session and an appointment. This isn’t a “pop in and see what happens” spot, and that’s intentional. When we plan it properly, it’s always worth it.

The World Food Prize Hall of Laureates: Is another iconic option for couples who want something grand and romantic. Both the gardens and interior spaces are available, but fees apply and appointments are required. This location shines when couples want something timeless, dramatic, and unmistakably Des Moines, just with a little more planning involved.

For a more relaxed downtown option, the exterior of the Ola Babcock Miller Building is such a great choice. Outdoor use only, no fee, and no appointment required. It’s especially good if you want a classic architectural backdrop without the formality of an interior space!

If your vibe leans more relaxed, movement-focused, and organic, Des Moines has some incredible outdoor options that feel spacious and unforced.
The Brenton Arboretum: Is ideal for couples who want variety in one place. There is a photographer fee, but it covers the entire year, and no appointment is required! You get open fields, trees, and changing seasonal textures, which means your gallery feels full and dynamic without bouncing between locations.

Jester Park, just outside Des Moines: Is perfect if you want nature without rules or restrictions. No fees, no appointments, and plenty of room to move! This is a great option for couples who want their session to feel easy, playful, and unstructured, especially at golden hour.

Water Works Park: Is another favorite for open space and simplicity. There’s no fee and no appointment required, but because it’s a public park, we always keep an eye on events that could interfere with a session. When timed well, it’s peaceful, scenic, and incredibly versatile!

For couples who want something a little more real, textured, and energetic, downtown Des Moines delivers in the best way!
Downtown Des Moines: Itself offers endless pockets, alleys, architecture, bridges, and unexpected corners, all without usage fees. It’s flexible and spontaneous, which makes it perfect for couples who want movement and variety without over-planning every moment.

The Republic on Grand: Is a great lifestyle option for couples who want something cozy and intimate. There’s no fee, but an appointment and signed release are required. It works best when planned intentionally and adds such a personal, editorial layer to a session.

The best engagement sessions aren’t about picking the most popular spot, they’re about choosing a location that matches how you want this season of your life to feel. Some couples want polished and timeless, some want open and airy, and some want something that feels a little gritty and lived-in. The beauty of Des Moines engagement locations is that we can mix and match to create something that feels true to you. And again, respecting these spaces matters. Asking permission, following guidelines, and planning ahead protects access for future couples and keeps these locations available long-term. It’s about being intentional, not restrictive!
