There’s just something about family photos in Des Moines when they’re done this way, relaxed, a little messy, full of movement, and actually fun. This session at Water Works Park was the perfect example of what happens when you let go of the pressure to “perform” and just show up as you are. No stiff posing, no forced smiles… just real moments, real connection, and a whole lot of joy. And honestly? That’s where the magic always lives!

If there’s one thing I’ll stand by forever, it’s this: kids should never feel like they’re “on stage” during a session. The second they feel like they have to perform, everything changes, the energy, the smiles, the connection. So instead, I lean all the way into letting them lead. This little guy absolutely ran the show in the best way. Whether he was being tossed in the air, grabbing onto his parents’ hands, or just sitting in the grass taking it all in.
Every moment felt natural and completely unforced. And you can see that in the photos, the giggles are real, the expressions aren’t coached, and the connection between them is effortless. When we approach family photos in Des Moines like this, it becomes less about getting the “perfect” shot and more about documenting your life exactly as it is right now. And trust me… that’s what you’ll want to remember.

Water Works Park is one of those locations that just works every single time. The open green space, the soft light filtering through the trees, the neutral tones, it all comes together in a way that keeps the focus exactly where it should be: on you and your people. This session felt so clean and timeless in the best way. Their outfits were simple and effortless, which let the connection take center stage. The soft greens, the cozy blanket in the grass, the warm light hitting just right, it created a look that won’t feel dated years from now. These are the kinds of family photos in Des Moines that age beautifully. And the best part? Nothing about it felt overdone. It was just a family hanging out together, loving on their baby, and soaking in a slow, easy moment.

Okay but don’t worry, I know you still want those photos where everyone’s looking, smiling, and framed up perfectly. We’re absolutely getting those. The difference is, we don’t force them. We build into them naturally. Throughout the session, we paused in between all the play to grab those classic shots, everyone sitting together, smiling at the camera, those sweet in-between moments where baby is looking right at me with the happiest little face. Because the environment stayed relaxed the entire time, those “must-have” photos didn’t feel like a chore… they just happened. That’s the balance I’m always aiming for with family photos in Des Moines, giving you a gallery that has both the real, documentary moments and the frame-worthy shots you’ll send to grandma!

If you’re the kind of family that doesn’t want stiff, overly posed photos… if you want something that feels real, easy, and actually fun, this is your sign. You don’t need perfect outfits, perfectly behaved kids, or a perfectly planned-out vision. You just need to show up, be present, and let your family be your family. I’ll take care of the rest.
