Three years ago, I took the biggest leap of my life, jumping off a cliff into the unknown. At 37 weeks pregnant, having just moved 17 hours away from my home, and having been unemployed for the past 5 months, I was itching to do something for myself and so, Becs JPG, LLC was born (and six days later so was my son… HA!).
I’ve always been one to tackle challenges head-on, to stay strong, and to work hard to provide for my family. Opening my own business was a completely new territory for me, aside from what I had learned in college. But over the last three years, I’ve achieved more than I could have ever imagined. I’ve had the privilege of meeting incredible people, traveling across the United States for photo shoots, and most importantly, I’ve grown into a woman I am truly proud to be.
As I celebrate my third year in business, I’ve taken the time to put together a list of lessons I’ve learned throughout this journey and how they have shaped me:
One of the most important things I have done since beginning my business, was continuing to do things I love. Of course, there were always the shoots I was paid to do, with clients I love, but being able to sit back and create a photoshoot I dreamed up… now that fuels me.
In the last year, I began a new part of Becs JPG, creating photoshoots that were unique, different, and most definitely fueled my “weirdo” side. I was also able to showcase them with other photographers. I have now hosted 3 full content days, a mini content day, and multiple styled shoots on the Gulf Coast. You can find more information about upcoming content days HERE.
If you don’t love something – don’t say yes to it. Don’t put yourself in a position that fills you with unhappiness and shame.
I have so many people tell me that they’re thinking about starting photography, and I am here to say JUST FUCKIN’ DO IT!
Pick up the camera.
Go to the Content Day.
Travel across the states.
Create a shoot for yourself.
Invest in your business.
Take that education course.
Do the mentorship.
Just DO IT. Because no matter what, you will learn something. About yourself, about your business, about your work – it matters to do things outside your normal and take the plunge.
Don’t be scared to fail or make mistakes because even if it doesn’t work out, you’ve learned valuable lessons for the future.
Here’s the thing – being a self-employed woman with personal expectations to continue to grow, be available, and always grind… isn’t realistic.
Over the last few years, I have pushed and worked hard to make my impact. In the last year, it was finally my time to sit back and realize I am wasting precious time with my family being glued to my phone or computer when we’re together.
Today, I set a do not disturb on my phone right away at 5:00 PM until 7:00 AM the next morning. I am intentional that when my family is around, I put my phone down. It sits on the charger in my bedroom while I interact, help cook, play cars with my son, and chat to my husband about how our day went.
Having your own business and your own passion is amazing but don’t forget that life is happening while you’re working and it doesn’t stop for anyone! Love what you do but don’t forget to take a step back and cherish those who make it all possible. Their love, their support – that is what is important!!
Over the last 3 years I have met the most amazing people, traveled to dream locations, shot creative and insane shoots, and created until my heart exploded.
Through all the ups, the downs, the self doubts, the self-pride, and insane growth — y’all have stayed by my side and supported me through everything. I am incredibly lucky and encouraged by all the love that has been shared with me for the last three years.
Thank you!!
I see my photography life as a complete life altering decision. I shot my first wedding in Cancun, Mexico and have since shot weddings in four different states. From traveling between the gulf coast all the way back to the midwest, I can't imagine what it would be like to not capture milestones along the way.
