Graduating from law school is a huge accomplishment, and Maggie’s Des Moines graduation session at the Iowa State Capitol Building was the perfect way to celebrate it. As a recent Drake Law graduate, she wanted photos that felt elevated, professional, and true to this exciting season of life. Between the stunning architecture of the Capitol and the iconic Law Library, this location offered so many unique backdrops that perfectly fit her achievement. Maggie was also incredibly sweet and had such a vibrant personality, which made this session so much fun to photograph!

Why the Iowa State Capitol Is Perfect for a Des Moines Graduation Session

If you’re looking for a graduation photo location in Des Moines that feels timeless and unique, it’s hard to beat the Iowa State Capitol Building. The grand staircases, historic architecture, marble details, and beautiful natural light make it one of the most versatile locations in the city. Every room feels a little different, which means you can create a gallery with a lot of variety without ever leaving the building. For Maggie’s session, the Iowa State Capitol Law Library was the standout location. The floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, warm wood tones, and historic details were the perfect fit for a Drake Law graduate. It felt professional and sophisticated while still allowing plenty of opportunities for photos that reflected her personality.

Bringing Personality Into This Des Moines Graduation Session

One of my favorite things about Maggie’s session was how easily her personality came through in the photos. While graduation is a major accomplishment worth celebrating, I always want sessions to feel like more than just cap-and-gown photos. The goal is to create images that capture who you are during this season of life. We mixed classic graduation portraits with more relaxed moments throughout the Capitol and Law Library. Whether she was flipping through books, walking through the historic halls, or simply laughing between poses, those candid moments helped create a gallery that felt natural, fun, and completely true to her!
