If you’ve been dreaming about a Salisbury House engagement session, let me just say… this location lives up to the hype! Between the historic architecture, beautifully kept gardens, and quiet corners tucked throughout the property, it’s one of my favorite spots in the Des Moines area for couples who want photos that feel timeless but still completely like them. Skylar and Santiago’s session was the perfect mix of playful, documentary-led moments and those editorial portraits that make you stop scrolling. We laughed, wandered the grounds, and created a gallery that felt effortless from start to finish.

One of my favorite things about Salisbury House is how much variety you get without ever leaving the property. You have the grand stone architecture, gorgeous arched doorways, manicured gardens, wide open lawns, and little tucked-away paths that all photograph beautifully. It almost feels like you’ve traveled somewhere much farther from Iowa.
For Skylar and Santiago, we leaned into all of it. We’d spend a few minutes letting them simply walk together, talk, and be present before moving into a more editorial setup against one of the historic doorways or windows. That’s exactly how I love to photograph engagement sessions. You don’t have to choose between candid moments and beautiful portraits, you really can have both.

The best engagement sessions never feel like you’re posing for an hour straight. Instead, they’re filled with movement, little conversations, inside jokes, and moments that happen naturally. That’s where my documentary approach comes in. I’ll give you prompts instead of stiff poses so your photos actually reflect who you are together.
Then, when the location calls for it (and Salisbury House definitely does), we’ll sprinkle in a few editorial-inspired portraits. The stone archways, dramatic staircases, and historic details create the perfect backdrop for those clean, elevated images that still feel relaxed. Looking through Skylar and Santiago’s gallery, it never felt like we were switching between two different styles. Everything flowed together naturally, and that’s exactly the goal.

If you’re looking for a location that feels elegant, has endless variety, and gives you both beautiful architecture and lush gardens, Salisbury House is hard to beat. Whether you’re envisioning something playful, romantic, editorial, or a little bit of everything, it’s one of the best places in the Des Moines area to make it happen.
