Instead of planning a long list of poses, we let the kids decide what came next. We started on the front porch, wandered through the yard, played on the swing set, and wrapped everything up with watermelon on the grass. It honestly felt more like a family hanging out together than a photo session, and that’s exactly why these images feel so genuine.

One of my favorite things about photographing families is watching kids come up with ideas that no adult would ever think to plan. One minute they wanted to sit on the porch with mom and dad, the next they were racing to the playset, climbing the ladder, flying down the slide, and giggling on the swings. Instead of stopping those moments, we leaned into them. That’s what documentary-style family sessions are all about. There’s plenty of room for hugs, cuddles, and a few photos where everyone is looking at the camera. But I never expect kids to sit perfectly still the entire time. They’re meant to explore, laugh, get distracted, and show off their personalities. Those are usually the photos families end up loving the most years later because they actually feel like their everyday life.

The contagious laughter on the porch, the excitement of taking turns on the slide, running barefoot through the grass, and everyone sitting together sharing watermelon as the sun started to set. None of it was rushed, and none of it felt forced. It was simply a summer evening together, documented exactly as it happened.
